About Greg Hester

Greg Hester An artist statement/bio:

I have been a visual artist for as long as I can remember. When I decided to devote my time to fine art painting, I mostly used acrylics, but eventually desired to switch over to the creamier medium of oil painting, which I found more satisfying. However, I found myself still desiring a medium which could function a little more sculpturally so I could work more three-dimensionally. Working in encaustic medium has been the perfect evolution for me, as it accepts oil as a colorant and allows for embedding of lightweight found objects.
Over my 20-plus years of serious painting I have gradually managed to come to a point where I may pursue art full-time. I have also developed a body of work that is focused on three specific areas: the male figure, the life of the sea, and box constructions. The three areas of focus are not always distinctly separated from one another, as there is often crossover in terms of approach and in the underlying theme of the interdependence of all things.
The male form has been inspirational to artists for millennia for its expressiveness, complexity, erotic power and mix of strength and vulnerability. Often I depict the male's spiritual connection to other beings --- such as animals, birds and fish. I also like to juxtapose a representative depiction of men with an abstract, primeval or pyroclasmic surrounding atmosphere; such a contrast can be dramatic and evocative of the experience of two connected worlds --- the world of the manifest and the world of potential.
My current "Fire and the Sea" paintings explore the structural similarities and spiritual connection between all beings and forms, as well as their ongoing dynamic evolution. Everything is either in the process of dissolving into the chemical bath of fire and water from which it came or in the process of being generated from and within it. I am fascinated by our origin out of the hydrothermal vents in the ocean's depths - the fact that we are resultant from the competing forces of water and fire in underwater volcanoes.
My "Black Box" constructions are an exploration of the mysterious process of creating a talismanic object, an object that can transport a viewer by the force of its inherent riddle, out of often utilitarian objects. Every item contained within the encaustic ground has symbolic significance. Various metals and mechanisms previously made to function in a machine are here given new context as symbols of volition. The boxes often contain eggs, a symbol of potential and life. Screens are employed to refer to the hidden; keys are used to symbolize a way of gaining access to power. Ultimately, however, the pieces are to be experienced uniquely by each viewer, who will provide their own personal iconographical context for all of these objects that make up each piece.
