My "Black Box" constructions are an exploration of the mysterious process of creating a talismanic object, an object that can transport a viewer by the force of its inherent riddle, out of utilitarian objects. Various metals and mechanisms previously made to function in a machine are here given new context as symbols of volition. The boxes often contain eggs, an obvious symbol of potential and life. Screens are employed to refer to the hidden; keys are used to symbolize a way of gaining access to power. Ultimately, however, the pieces are to be experienced uniquely by each viewer, who will provide their own personal context for all of these symbolic objects that make up each piece.

Maury (1855) My work focuses on primal forces and elements; the beeswax medium is for me very suitable for exploring the correlation between oceans (and their evolving life), terrestrial vulcanism, and the surging cosmos. The male form has been inspirational to artists for millennia for its expressiveness, complexity, power and mix of strength and vulnerability.
